Almost half of everyone that makes New Year’s resolutions never succeed. They end up making the same resolutions again and again, year after year. But we can break that pattern of failure when our resolutions are in line with what the Holy Spirit empowers us to be as believers.
When it comes to such resolutions, one of the best examples we have is Jonathan Edwards. Prior to his role in the First Great Awakening, a spiritual revival affecting both America and Europe, as a teenager, Edwards compiled a list of seventy resolutions derived from the Bible that he determined to live by.
His fourteenth resolution reads, “Resolved, never to do anything out of revenge.” There is a parallel here to the common resolution to be nicer, kinder, and more patient. Pastor Logan shows how that throughout the Bible God calls us to be long-suffering and commands us to not seek vengeance. What is more, God enables us to obey these imperatives as His Spirit works in us to produce patience.
