Almost half of everyone that makes New Year’s resolutions never succeed. They end up making the same resolutions again and again, year after year. But we can break that pattern of failure when our resolutions are in line with what the Holy Spirit empowers us to be as believers.
When it comes to such resolutions, one of the best examples we have is Jonathan Edwards. Prior to his role in the First Great Awakening, a spiritual revival affecting both America and Europe, as a teenager, Edwards compiled a list of seventy resolutions derived from the Bible that he determined to live by.
His twelfth resolution reads, “Resolved, if I take delight in it as a gratification of pride, or vanity, or on any such account, immediately to throw it by.” There is a principle here we can relate to our finances and the common resolution to save money. In this message Pastor Logan shows the direct connection between spiritual maturity and personal finances. Thus, financial goals are, in a very real sense, spiritual goals. In this area God calls us to wisdom, or frugality.
