Almost half of everyone that makes New Year’s resolutions never succeed. They end up making the same resolutions again and again, year after year. But we can break that pattern of failure when our resolutions are in line with what the Holy Spirit empowers us to be as believers.
When it comes to such resolutions, one of the best examples we have is Jonathan Edwards. Prior to his role in the First Great Awakening, a spiritual revival affecting both America and Europe, as a teenager, Edwards compiled a list of seventy resolutions derived from the Bible that he determined to live by.
His fifth resolution reads, “Resolved, never to lose one moment of time; but improve it the most profitable way I possibly can.” We can related this issue of time to the common resolutions to read more and to learn something new. Here Pastor Logan points out that it’s not that we don’t have time for such things, but that we are not intentional with the time we have. When we realize that time is wonderful, and finite, gift from God, we can utilize it with purpose.
